We’re at the point of modern U.S. beer history where brewers are taking pen to paper and documenting their past, in an effort to remind future generations of their contributions. There have been memoirs that range from the serious to the absurd, personal histories masked as how-to books and cookbooks that weave in brewery milestones. Now, from Durango, CO, comes this history of Ska Brewing, in comic book form.
Starting in 1995, it tells the tale of founders Matt, Dave and Bill and how things really took off for them when they hired Lana, who quickly became “director of marketing, accounting, accounts, shipping, receiving, imports, exports, HR, PR, RT, special projects and secretarial affairs.”
All is going well for team Ska at home, but meanwhile, “In some Big Dirty City …” trouble is coming from the black-suited big beer makers, who are worried about these brewing upstarts impacting their corporate beer culture. The corporate baddies come to town and try to take down our fearless heroes. In the following pages, fights break out—illustrated in comic fashion with punches landing like “Kapow!” and “Hops!”
I won’t spoil the ending, but the whole presentation is a throwback to a simpler time in beer and creatively presented. It’s a limited edition, so add Tales of the Legion of Ska to your collection today.
