LOVE AT FIRST BREW: THE MAKING OF DOUBLE BARLEY BREWING
Double Barley Brewing began when Cheryl gave Larry a simple homebrew kit for his 40th birthday gift. Six months later, Larry stumbled upon the kit in the attic and you can guess the rest of the story. Who knew it? Larry could brew great beer and Cheryl was pretty good at sampling. Life was about to change forever.
Over the next five years, dining rooms, guest rooms, and garages were transformed into the early stages of Double Barley Brewing. Picture Larry and buddies brewing in the driveway while Cheryl tried to keep the kids in check and entertain the constant stream of volunteer samplers. Needless to say, the Lane home was the hot spot to hang out in the neighborhood!
Larry and Cheryl have always wanted to own their own business and all it took was one simple birthday present (and Larry turning 40), to make their dream a reality. Although it’s been a lot of work creating a detailed business plan, fine tuning dozens of recipes, finding the perfect location in Smithfield, N.C. and designing an awesome taproom and beer garden, it’s also been a labor of love – a love for craft beer, the community and a desire to bring them together.

ABBY’S AMBER ALE (click on Abbey’s Amber for sell sheet)
A dark copper, medium bodied beer with a nice malt balance. Maris Otter and Crystal malts give this beer a rich character while not being overly malty. A great session beer, at least how Double Barley defines a session beer!
The Story: Abby’s amber came into creation quite simply I would say. Our BFFs daughter, Abby, was at the Lane nutshack one afternoon and was talking to Larry about beer, as she often would. When she heard about my Wilma’s Wandering EyePA she was instantly jealous and looked at Larry and stated matter of fact that she wanted a beer named after her. Now I know that this seems ordinary but you have to know that Abby was 9 years old at the time. She is no ordinary child either as she is an amazing musician, teaching herself the guitar and piano at the age of 6. She intends to celebrate her 21st birthday with a pint of Abby’s Amber Ale which is no ordinary amber. Abby has to wait but you fortunately are able to partake and she will have to live vicariously through you!
