Beervana Podcast, Episode 45: Saison
Jeff Alworth and Patrick Emerson take another deep dive into a classic style, this time with saison. In centuries past, these were the beers made by farmers to both preserve their harvest and slake thirsts over the coming year. Production of the style dwindled throughout the 20th century, and would have gone extinct if not for some heroic, last-minute interest by foreign writers and importers.
Now the style is one of the most commonly brewed in the United States. Alworth and Emerson discuss the style’s history, nature, ingredients, brewing methods and both modern and classic examples.
Jeff Alworth is the author of The Secrets of Master Brewers, The Beer Bible and Cider Made Simple. You can find him blogging at Beervana.
