In 1994, Kona Brewing Co. became the first microbrewery on the Big Island of Hawaii. This beer was originally produced in Hawaii; it is now made in Portland. The gekko on the label is a tribute to the Hawaiian belief that it is good luck to have one of these small lizards resident in your home. This beer is also exported to Japan.

Megabrewers advertise aggressively to convince locals and tourists alike that light lager goes best with surf, sand and suntan lotion. If you’re convinced, I recommend Longboard, for its bright gold color, head that won’t leave a mustache, fresh clean taste and light aftertaste. Chilled, it was refreshing with Dungeness Crab Louis, but lacking in character with a more flavorful pasture-finished hamburger, sautéed organic onions, heirloom tomatoes and authentic Dijon mustard.

As golden as a Hawaiian rising sun having passed over Oregon. Hint of floral hop aroma and a promise of full flavor. Nicely done balance of hop flavor and bitterness quite reminiscent of traditional old style European pilseners. Smooth lager taste. Really quenches. Great aftertaste with high beer drinkability. I’d pay money for this lager. Makes me want to go to Hawaii! Prague on the Big Island?

Pale gold with a sweet juicy malt, cornflour and floral hops aroma. Tart hops and citrus fruit dominate the palate, with a long finish full of tangy hops, fruit and sweet malt. This is more than a summer refresher—a lager of great complexity and depth. In the Czech fashion, it would be the ideal companion for rich fish or seafood dishes while the fruitiness would cut a rich dessert.
