A dinner to die for! Steamed mussels and fiery red peppers over al-dente fettuccini. Accompanying: Just-baked pumpernickel and Mortality Stout as dark as zin. The beer has one hell of a head. The bread and beer play a game of ying and yang with the delicate mussels and devilish sauce. On the nose and palate exotic roasted and toasted malt and fresh hops seduce the senses with espresso, chocolate, licorice flavors; and floral, fruity and vegetal tastes. For dessert: a thick home-made hazelnut cookie dipped in the stout confirms, you only live once!
Dense black with thick espresso-like head leads to confusion of aromas. I couldn't find the hints of coffee, treacle or tar I hoped for. Smooth and thick with some pithy citric notes, but mostly it is cereals balanced by simple hop bitterness; maybe a trace of malty sweetness. Reminds me a little of old fashioned bottle Guinness.
Presents itself ominously: a black crown cap adorned with a scythe, skull and raven on the label, and totally black pour. Complex nose, with chocolate, burnt toast, roasted coffee beans, dark fruit (cherries?). Nicely carbonated, almost creamy flavor, more chocolate and bitterness from the roast, finishing smooth but balanced. Certainly stout, but not excessively filling. It seems this beer, previously brewed at different locations, has found a good home.
