Barley-colored foam tops a pale bronze beer with a ripe fruity aroma – bitter oranges and tart lemons – with biscuity malt and hop resins. There’s a massive attack of bitter hops and tart fruit in the mouth balanced by sappy malt and a hint of vanilla. The finish is long and deep with an iron-like note from the hops, balanced by biscuity malt, with the fruit notes fading. It finally becomes dry and bitter. A brilliant example of the style.

This beer has great color, an invitational head, and come-hither aromatics. There's an almost astounding hop effect here. Although it starts out a bit heavy and strong, it shortly snaps back to settle in as a fine, well-balanced, quite proper IPA. This in keeping with the grand New England traditions ala Ballantines out of the 19th century. A memorable beer, you won't set this one down until you have finished with it.

The brand has endured a checkered past, but is back in full stride now that it’s being produced at Shipyard with its signature Ringwood yeast strain. An extremely quaffable India Pale Ale, with balanced notes of caramel and butterscotch sweetness, earthy bitterness, and estery fruit. This beer yearns for an imperial pint glass and friendly conversation.
