Unibroue from French Canada just gets better and better. This 6.2% abv russet/black, bottle-conditioned ale throws a deep barley-white collar of foam and has a luscious aroma of cappuccino coffee and peppery hops. Bitter-sweet roasted grain coats the mouth, balanced by tangy dark fruit and spicy hops. The long, lingering finish has creamy malt, powerful hints of chocolate and coffee, bitter fruit and more peppery hops. Merci et encore.

Talk about Noire, this beer is a neat shade of ebony! And the head actually sings, while the aromatics demand satisfaction from the dark side of Canada’s finest—and deliver! I’ll have another, please, but let me listen to the head’s lovely song first.

Beer, as in life, is a series of tradeoffs. Do I go fishing or sleep in? Should I drink a refreshing beer or sacrifice some drinkability for character and flavor? Chambly Noire, a dark but not heavy beer, does the latter. Notes of black licorice, plum, black currant and citrus, along with a dusting of cocoa powder and wisp of smoke. Now, do I have this with pastrami on rye or liverwurst and onion on pumpernickel?
