On the color scale, somewhere between black and very deep chocolate brown, topped with an earthy tan. On the sensual scale — over the top. The nose is like the aroma of a good coffee shop — soul satisfying. On the tongue, it is round and comforting, with a velvety mouthfeel of luscious roasted malts. Underlying the flavor is a sense of strength demanding hearty foods, like grass-fed beef stroganoff, wild seafood gumbo or a ripe Stilton and walnuts.

The aroma is as intense as the menacing green eyes staring at you from the label, a blast of roasting coffee beans mixed with warming alcohol, followed by caramel and burnt toffee. Full bodied, a bit tar-like, rich and sweet, with the slightest impression of dark fruit. Bracing hops set up a solid bitter/cocoa finish. This batch was brewed last May and will likely taste more complex with age, when this substantial combination of flavors begins to further overlap.
