Beautiful brown—like a well-worn saddle bathed in the light of a Vienna sunset. Nice nose of nuts, vegetables and chocolate is soul-satisfying. Clean taste is but lightly malty and hoppy, but balanced for its diminutive frame, and remarkable given the difficulty in securing organic hops. Hoppy aftertaste is clean and lingering. Super with salad Nicoise and couscous with organic root vegetables and a touch of harissa.
Let’s start with the label – my bottles have a picture of Sean K’s wedding party, and an invitation for customers to submit photos for future labels. As important is the USDA Organic stamp. Peak, which has its beers made under contract by Shipyard Brewing, uses organic hops even though that’s not necessary for certification. Seemingly designed for a “session,” where we can discuss the environmental impact of importing hops from New Zealand. An easy drinker, with lightly nutty and caramel aromas seamlessly turning into chocolate and plum flavors, the finish dry and earthy.
