Reddish amber color. Full citrus aroma, with dried spice, roasted malt and gentle honey. The citrus is less aggressive on the palate, tamed by a satisfyingly rich maltiness that coats the palate, along with caramel, toasted biscuit and a balancing dry finish. The smooth, dry finish keeps the beer very drinkable.
Maybe it’s the name, or perhaps the rich coppery color of this ale, but I was expecting luscious and malty when I raised my glass. What I got, however, was a nose of cherry fruit supporting a whole lot of hops, with some spicy notes kicking around in the background. On the palate, the hops mesh with more ripe, red fruit and significant alcohol to make an IPA that seems British in its malty style but with the unmistakable character of American hops. A surprising beer, yes, but also a boundary-blurring delight.
