Cherry Street Tavern, 12 North 22nd St., Philadelphia, 19102, 215-561-5683. Classic Philadelphia downtown neighborhood taproom; no pretense, just excellent local craftbrews on draft, good sandwiches, friendly staff and clientele. Cool architecture, including the huge backbar and tiled “trough” at the foot of the bar from back in the day when men didn’t have to leave their spot when nature called.

Ministry of Information, 447 Poplar St., Philadelphia, 19123, 215-925-0999. Ministry may look a little shady from the outside but once you’re inside the bottled beer selection is great. The food is really tasty and cheap! The juke box is outstanding and they have two pool tables. There is usually the house cat on a bar stool and the bar is dog friendly. It doesn’t get much better than this!
