Harpoon Brewery first brewed Harpoon IPA as a summer seasonal in 1993.

In the summer of 1993, a struggling brewery in Boston decided to do something different. In a region where there was little demand for hoppy beers, the brewery made an India pale ale with hops from the Pacific Northwest.

Harpoon Brewery expected its seasonal offering to have few fans, but Harpoon IPA quickly became the brewery’s best-selling beer and helped the brewery reach profitability. Twenty years later, Harpoon Brewery—the ninth best-selling craft brewery in the United States—owes much of its success to Harpoon IPA. Lucky for us, the brewery has continued to experiment with the style and the staff at All About Beer Magazine recently enjoyed tasting all of Harpoon’s IPAs.
