There are a lot of wheat beers on the market these days, or, that is to say, a lot of beers that contain some wheat content. There are very few, however, that attribute all their grain content to wheat, with no barley whatsoever. Because of the nature of this bock, there’s a nutrition fact label on the side of the bottle, informing me that the 750-mL bottle has two servings, at 270 calories each, 1.5g of total fat, 20mg of sodium, a total carbohydrate content of 16g, (same with sugars) and a whopping 2g of protein and eight percent vitamin A. Brewed with red wheat malt, it pours the color of cola with a thick tan head that consolidated quickly but laced the glass as it emptied. Faint aromas of dark stone fruit, and grape skin come quickly. There’s a sherry-like quality to the taste along with bits of burnt toast and rich, overcooked caramel. As it warms, it takes on a very pleasing, oh-so-slight sour characteristic, not unlike Guinness. Overall very smooth and leaving a bit of alcohol heat, this would be a great accompaniment to a grilled pork tenderloin sandwich.
