Double Nickel Vienna LagerJune 9, 2017
Just a hint of freshly cooked ice cream waffle cones on the nose. Aroma: subtle toffee, hazelnut and toasted batter notes, but stops well short of sweet. Gentle whole-wheat maltiness on the palate, again, with almost no hint of sweetness. Bitterness does not really make an appearance, but the beer has a very low-key balance that gives a subtle impression of tropical fruit. This would be a great everyday drinker and a super-friendly food beer. Delicate enough for fish; big enough for your loaded burger.Ray Daniels is the founder and director of the Cicerone Certification Program and the author, editor or publisher of more than two dozen books on beer and brewing. Comes on strong with flavors of caramel and cola, followed quickly by an iron water note that gives it a bit of a savory quality. This style can tend toward being too sweet, but in the case of this Jersey beer, it carefully walks the line, teasing you with sugar between sips but never becoming cloying. A snap of earthy, spicy hops keeps things interesting. A versatile beer that adapts to the situation at hand, it’s just right for whatever you have in your mixed grill this summer.John Holl is the editor of All About Beer Magazine.
