"Since 1845"⎯a claim not many American brewers can make! I like the deep amber color, quite dark until you hold it up to a light. The head is made up of large camelhair bubbles that unfortunately dissipate very quickly. The nose is slight, mostly malty but with a pleasant underlying hopiness. On the palate, the taste is malty and full-bodied but too thin to be called bock. Enjoyable with sausages and sauerkraut, wiener schnitzel and juicy hamburgers, this is one of America's finest dark lagers.

A nice beer you’d want to date. Aroma and flavor are mild with fruit and chocolate notes. Bitter personality from the darker roasted malts comes through in the flavor. Sweet, chewy malt character and foundation of hop flavor are lacking, perhaps traded off for what some would consider “American drinkability.” Clean, neutral aftertaste. A nice, middle-of-the-road, American dark beer, but a bock? Stylistically in flavor? No.

Ripe and enticing aroma of fresh malt loaf and dark fruit, with rich malt and sultanas in the mouth. Hops make their influence felt in the finish, which is dry and bitter with a backing of spices and dark fruit. Perhaps not as complex as a Bavarian bock, but this one would see me nicely through Lent. A good companion for pizza or spicy dishes.
