Doppelbocks are one of the beer styles that got me hooked on specialty beers – they are the steak beers of the beer world. Rich and mouthy, doppelbocks are a meal unto themselves. Grabbing a Consecrator from Bell’s Brewery – a doppelbock known for its intensity – just builds expectations. Fulfilled, by the way. I love the mahogany color of this beer, amber highlights with walnut tones. The nose is all malt, bready with hints of sweetness. The flavor ranges from toffee to caramel, all within a thick-ish mouthfeel. I’m thinking sweet bread, toasted with butter. At cellar temp, the carbonation lightens the texture a bit. There’s a bit of fruitiness in the finish which was rather surprising. Nice beer, Larry. I’m looking forward to my second.
