Review: The brewers at Grand Canyon used a clever device to get to their objective. They call it the Flavor Bomber, a long skinny widget that is packed with bourbon flavored chips. Pours very still with a minimal head. Rich burgundy color, with light vibrating round the edges of the glass. Dusty, rich dark grape aroma offset by hints of vanilla and a suggestion of pepper; the nose finishes with an ethanolic heat. There are hints of the maple syrup used in the brewing but far from overpowering, as maple can be. The body is surprisingly light given the rich aroma. Solid carbonation despite the absence of head. A lot of caramel/brown sugar in the beginning with a mineral-like dryness in the finish.
The subtlety of this beer is like a fine meal that delivers a satisfying experience without the dullness of too much. Pair the Winter Bourbon Barrel Bomber with any beef or any dish with a rich cream sauce. It might be more versatile than other bourbon barrel beers because of its light touch in its design and execution. Not a big beer, but a very enjoyable beer on its own or paired with a dish.
