Heavy Seas CrossBones Session IPAJune 7, 2016
A deep, bright golden liquid with sea foam of different-sized bubbles floating on top, hanging on for high life. Faint medicinal nose is pleasant but not forceful like many IPAs, more English than American in style. It seems a bigger beer than 4.5%, with a complex cacophony of hops playing against sweet, round malt like a sail against a powerful wind. This is a beer that calls for something spicy, like mahi-mahi tacos covered with red and green salsa, served in a whole wheat tortilla and accompanied with jalapeño slaw.Charles Finkel is founder of Merchant du Vin and the Pike Brewing Co. Super nice head of foam and cheerfully hazed with hops. Sweet hop floral and fruity notes emerge. Enticingly elegant. Refreshing light body; balanced hop bitterness that isn’t aggressive fades to lightly whirling malt sweetness. Perfect mouthfeel for a session IPA. A bitter aftertaste re-emerges and continues to allure. A terrific session beer for those who adore IPA, and want to enjoy a few more IPAs than usual.Charlie Papazian is the author of the New Complete Joy of Homebrewing, founder of the Great American Beer Festival and national beer examiner at examiner.com.
