A dense collar of foam sits atop a beautifully clean and sparkling copper-colored beer with a deep and labyrinthine aroma of fresh tobacco, newly-mown grass, sultanas, tangy hops, and even a hint of bubblegum. Peppery hops—an English accent here—biscuity malt, and tart and bitter citrus fruit bombard the tastebuds while the intensely bitter, iron-like, hoppy finish has more powerful hints of fruit and juicy malt. No wonder the British Raj waited for the ships to come into Bombay and Calcutta with new batches of “India Ale.”

This beer has beautiful color, with an elegant head structure, presenting a quiet, expressive song. However, all this is folderol when the delightful hop bouquet springs forth, carrying one directly into the hop fields, themselves. But that, too, drops away as the dramatic intensity of the beer’s finely balanced flavor profile flows forth. I’m impressed.

Intense, yet a clean and quaffable California IPA. Bold citrus, piney aromas are laced with lush honey and caramel. The same goes for the palate, textured with a mouth-coating maltiness and a big, hoppy finish. I live in Pennsylvania, but I close my eyes, sip this beer, and swear I’m sitting at the Toronado beer bar in San Francisco.
