When I first opened my can of Leinenkugel Brewing Company‘s seasonal brew Summer Shandy the smell reminded me of a warm sunny day in Austria. I had the pleasure of visiting a small town in Austria several times in the ’80s and ’90s both in the winter and summer months. I always ended a long hike in the Alps at a local restaurant with a radler in hand. A radler is the same as a shandy but the Austrian way: a lager mixed with lemonade (in England, they also use ginger ale or ginger beer). Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy is a wheat beer with honey and lemonade. The wheat beer flavor is present as the foundation and on top of it (like whipped cream on a ice cream sundae). The honey adds a sweetness and the lemonade a refreshing flavor. This is just a perfect beer for a hot North Carolina summer day.
