What a great hop effect! This despite a relatively low IBU content (30), but very hard brewing water. This is a grand summer (or lawnmower) brew for that reason alone. So refreshing and wonderful on a hot summer day. It is hard to resist this beer's fine malt character when the hop content is so well managed.

The hazy, deep golden beer raises a fluffy white head. The aroma is right on the money--deep toffeeish malt wafts from the glass. On the palate, the hop attack is up front and bracing, then gives way to full-bodied malt. The hops reassert themselves in a flintily hoppy finish. Very nicely done. A quibble--a note says that the beer is “lightly filtered”, but in my opinion pilsner should never show a haze. A touch more hop aroma would be nice. These are minor matters; this is a superb beer, far better than the tired Czech imports we’re supposed to be so impressed by.

One of my favorite pilsners, and one that I have known since its earliest days. This bottling traveled very well. It poured with a big, creamy head, leaving a very good lace. There were lovely, appetizing aromas of both malt and hops, one after the other. The same one-two in the palate: first a rich, smooth maltiness; then a firm, long, leafy bitterness. I am wholly convinced that the “under-modified” malt and decoction mash both make an important contribution to the character of this beer.
