Amber-red, with a nutty, malty aroma that spells out the contribution made by well-cured crystal or caramalt. Hints of blood oranges on the nose followed by a malty and nutty palate with a faint hint of chocolate and gentle spicy hops. Hops build in the finish but malt dominates. A Vienna-style lager that could do with a tad more hop bitterness to balance the rich maltiness but would make a good dessert beer.

Bright copper, and the tan head drops quickly to a ring. The aroma shows little hop, but plenty of biscuity malt and hints of spice around the edges. The palate is a study in balance, with tight hopping bracing up a round, soft, malty center. The beer rides out cleanly, leaving lingering bread and light caramel. An American rendition of a bock bier, this is simple but delicious. It’s hardly a session beer, but I could be tempted to stick with it for an evening — an evening involving a large pork chop slathered in olive oil and rosemary, to be precise.
