Olde Buzzard Lager is brewed at the Buzzard Bay Brewery on a 200-acre farm in rural SE Massachusetts. Owned by the Russell family, the farm-brewery and farm winery land are part of the family’s commitment to preserving rural farmland. Olde Buzzard Lager is brewed with a blend of domestic Magnum and Challenger hops (for bittering) and German Hallertau hops (for aroma). In the future, Buzzard Bay plans to grow a portion of its own brewing ingredients.

There’s no indication of what style of lager this is, but the rich gold color and firm malt palate would seem to indicate either Bohemian pilsner or Dortmund Export. A sniff offers none of the floral character of the Saaz hop, instead a more earthy, slightly minerally nose, so I’d say the latter. For all its malt character, this has a pleasing hop bitterness and dry finish that makes me want to serve it with a spicy Pad Thai.

This one simply says, “Ho-ho, time for a beer.” Golden lager, medium bodied with nice hop flavor notes and aroma. Nicely balanced, full flavored without being assertive. A kind of beer that keeps you in good company and that goes with a variety of food types. Friendly and well brewed.

A brilliant label leads to a pale gold beer with a hint of bronze, a tightly beaded head, and a delightful aroma of lemon citrus and floral hops. The beer is clean and quenching in the mouth, with a firm maltiness balanced by a good hop attack. The finish lingers, with tart, citrus fruit, creamy malt and a big hop note. This is a lager that is not frightened to offer a bold hop character.
