Butte Creek Brewing Co., founded in 1996, terms itself “Chico’s only microbrewery”—a reference to the now very large Sierra Nevada, also in Chico, where Butte Creed’s brewmaster worked for several years. The brewery’s four original 40-barrel fermenters were named Chico, Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo.

For brewers, sourcing organic malt and hops is a challenge, but it's worth the extra effort. The handsome color is a deep burnt sienna with amber highlights. A remarkable head is creamy tan-gorgeous and long lasting. Floral nose balances acidity and sweetness. Mouthfeel is chewy and sensual with great finesse and a long, clean finish. We served friends organic Thundering Hooves grass fed burgers and hand cut organic home fries with Butte Creek Porter. The dinner was organic and orgasmic!

Pours like a porter should! Nice white head, yet rich underlying appearance. Subtle cocoa and hop aftertaste, but not assertive. A refreshing chestnut brown porter with a lively yet light body. Nice balance of cocoa, caramel and subtle hop flavors. Its lightness provides a compliment to many types of foods. A classic middle ground American porter.

Ruby/brown beer with smooth chocolate, vinous fruit and tangy hops on the nose. A big blast of bitter hops bursts across the tongue with rich sultana fruit, chocolate and roasted grain. The finish is bitter-sweet with a continuing chocolate note balanced by burnt fruit and dark grain. It ends with a dry, bitter punch of hops. Complex and quenching.
