Peacemaker IPANovember 1, 2001 Helena, MT
Sleeping Giant Brewing Co. Helena, MT Available: Only on tap at The Brewhouse Pub and Grille in Helena, MT The recipe for Peacemaker, a traditional English-style IPA, was developed as a peace offering to The Brewhouse Pub and Grille after a falling out with the restaurant. The gesture seemed to have worked as The Brewhouse now dedicates nine of their eighteen taps to Sleeping Giant brews. ABW: 4.8 Color: 9 Bitterness: 60 Gravity: 1061
Close your eyes and think of England, or at least an English sailing ship bound for Bombay a couple of centuries ago. To describe it as aggressively hopped would be an understatement. Humulus lupulus dominate the huge nose and palate, but not at the expense of a rich delicious and satisfying malt flavor. An immense beer, it makes a wonderful aperitif and would also compliment most Indian, Chinese and Mexican dishes. Super with blue-veined raw milk cheeses, olive bread and acacia honey.

Stunning amber-red color with a rich biscuit-like toasted malt aroma with an artistic touch of hops florals. Quite full-bodied. Hop flavor without the assertiveness of many American type IPAs. Nicely balanced with memorable depth of malt and hops. Alcohol level is warming and pleasant. Very nice English-style IPA.

“English-style IPA” it promises on the label. Sorry to mount my old hobby-horse again, but it’s too dark, chaps! Those early IPAs in the 19th century really were pale, as such stewed malts as crystal came along several decades later. That aside, this is a stunning ale, from its tart, almost nettle-like aroma balanced by juicy malt and a fascinating hint of dried fruit, through a palate dominated by zingy hops and rich malt, and a long, lean finish that walks the tightrope skilfully between bitter hops and creamy malt. A fine companion for pasta dishes.
