Falmouth, Cornwall, United Kingdom Style: New England-Style IPA ABV: 6.5%
A hazy IPA inspired by the formative beers of Vermont and New England.
This deliberately murky-golden beer is a fine attempt to tap into the trend for Vermont IPAs. The muddy looks are somewhat unappealing, but things pick up with the aroma, which is packed with cleansing hop resins, offering pine and a squeeze of tangerine. The taste is, surprisingly, not too thick or chewy, considering both the appearance and the ABV. There’s a hop zing from the start—punchy, spicy, piney and sappy—with juicy tangerine, lemon and grapefruit, but it’s not aggressive or claggy. The finish is firmly dry and full of pithy bitterness, with oranges and pine carrying through.Jeff Evans is author of the Good Bottled Beer Guide, The Book of Beer Knowledge, Beer Lover's Britain and So You Want to Be a Beer Expert? Beer names get ever more bizarre. This 6.5% IPA is brewed in Cornwall in the deep Celtic fringe of England alongside the Atlantic Ocean. It has a hazy bronze/gold color and a big apricot, peach and banana aroma with peppery hops and cracker biscuit malt. Hops and fruit dominate the palate, but a sweet grain note adds balance. The finish is dry with peppery hops, rich fruit and biscuit malt but ending with a final burst of sweetness from fruit and grain.Roger Protz is the author of 300 Beers to Try Before You Die and 300 More Beers to Try Before You Die.
