EUGENE, OR—A beer chemist has opened Eugene’s first beer analysis facility. BrewLab is the brain child of Dana Garves, a University of Oregon alum and formerly Ninkasi Brewing’s laboratory technician.
“It became increasingly apparent that brewers of all skills need to know the alcohol and bitterness content of their beer.” Garves stated. While federal regulations only require ABV (Alcohol by Volume) to be displayed on a beer label, “most brewers gain insight on how to improve their craft by analyzing the bitterness, the color, and the acidity of beer.” Tracking changes in a beer recipe along with charting final results will allow brewers to hone their skills and brew quality beer consistently.
“There isn’t anything like BrewLab out there for brewers.” Garves explains, “most analysis facilities promise results in 5-7 business days, require two bottles of beer, and will cost an arm and a leg.”
BrewLab uses state of the art technology to provide high accuracy results at a low cost. Brewers everywhere are rejoicing for an ABV analysis that only costs $20, requires only 4oz of sample, and gives access to digital results within 48 hours. Analyses include: ABV, ABW, IBU, Color (SRM and tristimulus), pH, real and apparent extract, RDF, ADF, Calories/12oz, and original and final gravities.
Garves says that she hopes easy and cheap access to scientific measurements will improve beer quality in Oregon. “I want Oregon beer to be the best in the country. In order to do that, our community needs to expect the highest quality out of our brews.” BrewLab also offers troubleshooting and consultation to commercial breweries for improving beer quality and consistency.
BrewLab is fully operational and accepting samples. Visit the website at oregonbrewlab.com to submit a sample or learn more.
