(Glendale, WI) – It’s an in between moment: we’ve carved the pumpkins but not baked them in a pie. Still, visions of pumpkin pie danced in Sprecher Brewing’s brewmaster’s head. So what did he do? He created a first, Sprecher’s first Pumpkin Spice Beer. The brewmaster put Pub Brown Ale in a Randall with fresh pumpkin, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg thereby creating a fresh Pumpkin Spice Ale with a wonderfully soft mouthfeel that balances the pumpkin-spice interplay very nicely. At 4.5% alcohol by volume, this is truly a great fall session beer – not too sweet or spicy, just a palate pleasing compliment to cooling autumn weather, falling leaves, firelight and football.
What is a Randall?
First created at Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Beach, DE, as described by brewery founder Sam Calagione, “Basically, [a Randall is] a sophisticated filter system that allows the user to run draft beer through a chamber of whole leaf hops, spices, herbs, fruit, etc. so that the alcohol in the beer strips the flavor from whatever you add and puts it in the beer.” You end up with a beer that has a high resonance of the Randall ingredients, which is why the Sprecher brewmaster chose this instrument for the Pumpkin Spice Brown Ale.
