I usually approach a barleywine with as much trepidation as going to a CGI blockbuster. I gird myself for an assault against the senses. My complaint with most barleywines lies in the ferocious viscosity that starts with a heavy layer on my tongue and ending with a huge alcohol burn. The label on this beer suggested a different run. India Barleywine Style Ale got me thinking this was going to be a different idea altogether. Sure enough. The nose explodes with floral, citrusy aroma. The flavor still holds to the caramel and dried fruit notes of a classic barleywine, but the overload on the hops makes it a lot more intriguing than some lesser crafted brews of this style. A hybrid between a double IPA and a barleywine? Could be. A spectacularly complex and enjoyable beer.
