I have this solid glass commemorative mug from Fuller’s Brewery that weighs in rather hefty and holds an imperial pint minimum. It is like a muscular dimpled mug, without on the dimples. Last night I noticed a bottle of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout which appeared to be a similar volume as my favorite glass mug. Ironically, sitting next to it was a single serve chocolate bunt cake, a gift from my wayward teenage daughter. Soon I was sitting at the counter with two round black things staring at me. It was a perfect pairing of textures, both were creamy and rich. Neither had any of the outstanding notes – espresso bites or bitter chocolate – often found in beverages or desserts of this color. As I have written on more than one occasion, I am stymied when it comes to the subtle flavors, yet imminently satisfied with rich, round and balanced. Such was my evening with these two.
