It was kind of natural, with my Scandinavian background, that Widmer Brothers’ Reserve Prickly Pear Braggot would end up on my desk to review. Braggot and mead was like soda for the Vikings (at least that is what the myth say). The Prickly Pear pours a light golden with a head that fades quickly. It smells faintly like prickly pear, a fruit of the cactus. The flavor is initially sweet with a slight burning sensation on the tongue. The hop notes are muted if present at all but clearly there because if not the sweetness would be much more presumptuous. The high alcohol content (10 percent ABV) sort of takes over the flavor of the beer. If you like sweet, strong brews, this limited release is one for you.
