Biscayne Bay is one of the few parks that can only be explored by boat rather than by car since 95 percent of the park’s area is underwater. Visitors without their own boats can hop aboard a glass-bottomed boat or paddle themselves around looking at coral reefs, pirate shipwrecks and a host of fauna you won’t find in many other locales such as alligators and manatees. To protect this unique ecosystem, there is no lodging or commercial establishments of any kind inside the park. There is, however, camping permitted on that other five percent encompassing (usually) dry land. Before you enter, your last chance to pick up some fermented provisions is at Sailfish Landing in Florida City along the Dixie Highway.
