The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery

Charlotte, NC

An authentic Düsseldorf-style Altbier. A full-flavored start transitions to a smooth, balanced finish. Copper is a so-called “hybrid” beer, which means that although it’s technically an ale, it is lagered for several weeks after primary fermentation.

Pretty pour. Handsome bright copper color with a contrasting ecru head that hangs on and on. Modest malty nose is not big, but delightful. On the palate, the sweet malt is balanced with the slight acidity of bitter hops. Clean finish. Excellent choice for barbecue ribs, cornbread, my momma’s potato salad and pecan pie.

Copper amber with a slight opalescent haze. Pleasant sweet, biscuit-like and floral aroma beckons. Rich malt flavors linger nicely, hinting of crème brûlée, but not really. Smooth, balanced and well brewed. Dignified rather than a bombshell. Quaff after quaff with a nice hop bitterness developing at the back of my tongue, continuing to beckon. Quality beer that is accessible to all. No drama, but solemnly sound.
