(Press Release)

Old Devil Moon, a full bar with a Cicerone-led beer program, craft cocktails, sunny/moonlit patio, the best po’boys in town, and an occult-inspired vibe opens today (Tuesday, August 30th, 2016) at 5PM. ODM is located at 3472 Mission St at Cortland Ave, at the crossroads of the Mission, Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, and Glen Park neighborhoods.

“A devilishly good team.” The magic of Old Devil Moon is our team. We are Chris Cohen, former lawyer, Certified Cicerone, founder of the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild, National BJCP judge, author of the Beer Scholar Study Guides, the textbook would-be cicerones use to study for their exams; Andrew Kelly, Certified Cicerone and BarSmarts Advanced cocktail wiz who previously operated some of the best bars in Los Angeles, including Little Bear, Surly Goat, and Verdugo Bar; Ericka Schell, Certified Cicerone and draft system mastermind, William Marshall, accountant and certified beer geek, and Carson Beker, former attorney, playwright, storyteller, and reader of cards. ODM is quite possibly the only bar in the world owned by three Certified Cicerones (think beer sommelier) and it’s one of the very few run by bartenders who just might read your fortune while they help you pair your food with a special beer.

“The best beer bar in this mortal realm.” What happens when three beer fiends walk into a bar and design their dreams? It begins with a custom built draft system: a wood and tile covered walk-in cooler right at the bar keeping each beer at the perfect temperature, 19 flow-controlled Perlick beer faucets, a beer engine for a cask ale, and a limit of 20 rotating taps to make sure we only pour the freshest beer. What beer, you ask? We emphasize direct-from-brewery purchasing from our favorite brewers both local and abroad, many of whom we are proud to call our friends. We feature many beers that are rarely, if ever, found elsewhere in San Francisco. Our opening tap list includes beers from Almanac Beer Co, Alpine Beer Co, BareBottle Brew Co, Boulevard Brewing Co, Bruery Terreux, Craftsman Brewing, Eagle Rock Brewery, Ferment Drink Repeat, Fieldwork Brewing, Firestone Walker Brewing, Freewheel Brewing, Het Anker, HenHouse Brewing, Ol’ Republic Brewery, Sante Adairius Rustic Ales, Schloss Eggenberg, Rodenbach, Stone Brewing, and Tag + Jug Cider. We will always have a mix of local hits, Belgians, Northern European treats, plus a cask real ale will always be available. Beyond the tap list, ODM will be a hub of beer events ranging from food pairings to special releases to Meet the Brewer nights where beer geeks can encounter their new favorites. We do it for the love of beer: 0% snobbery, 150% you’ve GOT to try this.

“A howlingly good cocktail and liquor menu.” ODM is the only elite level beer bar in SF that also has a full liquor license. We focus on fine rum, exquisite whiskey, and locally made craft liquors. We’re opening with three liquors on draft – Fernet Francisco, Sutton Cellars vermouth, and Old Grand Dad Bonded rey whiskey. Also on draft, we have two premixed cocktails (a Mint Julep and an El Presidente), nitro coffee, and two wines from Treasure Island’s own Conduit Winery. Our cocktail menu ranges from classics, including a ‘Ti Punch, a 12 Mile Limit, and La Louisiane, to original Old Devil Moon creations. Literature lovers will get a delicious kick out of the Ignatius J. Rye-ly (made with nitro coffee) and our Bonbon tastes like dessert did some devil dealing with a barrel of rum.

“The Devil is in the detail, the magic is in the atmosphere.” Old Devil Moon’s décor is inspired by the occult imagery of tarot decks, the freak show tent, the dive bar right next to the conjure shop at the edge of the bayou. It was imagined by Chris Cohen and designer/installation artist Katie Gong. Everywhere you look, the eye lands on a mystery or a delight: a fireplace drips with candles and skulls, a skeletal cat winks at you from behind the rum bottles, a chiromancer’s palm model stands by the door for handy reference. A patio with full sun (or full moonlight) for watching the sunset and telling ghost stories. Even the tap board has a trick to it – you’ll have to come by to figure out, this isn’t your ordinary chalkboard.

“You could sell your soul for this Fried Oyster Rockefeller Po’Boy.” We claim the best Po’Boys in town. The secret recipe is our consulting chef Charlie Kleinman and working directly with artisans, some of whom are so local they walk the goods right over – we’ve got ODM pickles from Paulie’s Pickling, Pinkie’s Bakery french bread, our own house barrel aged hot sauce, tasso from Avedano’s Meats, and seafood from Jimmy at Gulfish, who works with individual fishing boats for delicious, best practice gems from the Gulf. It comes together in classic-style Po’Boys like our Fried Green Tomato Po’Boy or the fried Gulf oyster and shrimp Seafood Combo Po’Boy, plus never-seen-before offerings like the Oyster Rockefeller Po’Boy and the house made Bologna and Mustard Slaw Po’Boy you have to taste to believe. Come hungry.

A spirit of revelry and love. What moves us most at Old Devil Moon is love. ODM is a passion project by people who love beer and love San Francisco. Some of us live right down the street and we took over the bar from a retiring neighbor. We know we have some magic here. We live to gather friends, old and new and those we haven’t met yet, around exquisite beer, cocktails and food. We can’t wait to welcome you. Old Devil Moon: Exceptional Beer & Cocktails. Stories Told, Mischief Made, Spirits Raised. Come join the revelry. Welcome.
