Because a new year is a reason to wax poetic, here’s an inky black ale with a coffee-colored head to peer into while doing some self examination. Aromas of coffee and raisin rise and swirl from the glass, with hints of prune and chocolate. The cocoa becomes more apparent on the tongue. It’s satisfyingly smooth but with a big body. It has all the elements of a certain mass-produced Irish stout, but is more beefed up, solid and satisfying. This staves off the winter chill.
