Portland, Maine (February 9, 2026) — Award-winning, Maine-brewed Allagash Brewing Company is announcing that in 2025 they brewed with 2,025,674 pounds of Maine-grown grain—a major milestone in its long-standing commitment to Maine agriculture. This amount, more than double of Allagash’s original goal of one million pounds, marks a significant transformation of the state’s grain economy.
“When we made this pledge, Maine simply didn’t have the capacity to support it,” said Jason Perkins, Brewmaster, Allagash Brewing Company. “Reaching more than two million pounds shows what’s possible when brewers, farmers, and processors make, and keep, long-term commitments to grow together.”
The B Corp certified Allagash first made its pledge in 2016, committing to brew with one million pounds of Maine-grown, Maine-processed grain by 2021. At the time, the goal was ambitious: Allagash was using approximately 65,000 pounds of Maine-grown grain because the state lacked the infrastructure, processing capacity, and scale to support that volume. But by pairing a long-term commitment with deep collaboration with local farmer partners like Maine Malt House, Aurora Mills & Farm, and Blue Ox Malt House, Allagash reached the one-million-pound milestone in 2021, expanded to 1.8 million pounds in 2023, and, in 2025, more than two million pounds.
This progress reflects more than increased purchasing; it represents a transformation of Maine’s grain ecosystem. Working closely with local farms, malthouses, and processors, Allagash helped catalyze the infrastructure needed to grow, malt, and distribute high-quality grain at scale. Those partnerships pushed boundaries of quality and creativity, enabling Maine-grown grain to meet the needs not only of Allagash, but of breweries across New England.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the team for taking this idea and making it work for everyone involved,” said Rob Tod, Founder, Allagash Brewing Company. “Thanks to our collective efforts, there’s now more high-quality grain, that’s more affordable, coming right from our backyard in Maine. It’s a win for us, it’s a win for our farmer partners, and it’s a win for beer fans and brewers across New England.”
Beyond economic impact, brewing with local grain also reduces emissions associated with long-distance transportation. By purchasing over two million pounds of Maine-grown grain, Allagash continues to shrink its supply-chain footprint while strengthening local agriculture.
Re-writing Allagash Recipes:
To brew with more Maine-grown grain, the brewing team had to experiment with how to add more Maine-grown grain to existing beer recipes, like Allagash White, their beloved flagship beer.
By running pilot batches and trials of different local grains, the Allagash team was able to ensure that their existing beers wouldn’t change in the slightest if they used local 2-row barley, or local wheat, versus sourcing from other suppliers. And with trials and the brewery’s team of dedicated quality specialists, Allagash was able to continually increase their usage of local grain in their core beers, with no tangible changes to the beer’s quality, or shelf life.
