HERSHEY, PA – Tröegs Brewery recently claimed three gold medals at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival, the largest national beer competition recognizing the most outstanding beers produced in the United States.

Gold, silver and bronze medal winners were announced on October 13 at the 31st annual Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. Tröegs was recognized for its flagship HopBack Amber Ale, a hoppy Amber Ale utilizing whole flower hops to create a fresh aroma and spicy flavor backed by a rich caramel character; year-round DreamWeaver Wheat, an unfiltered German-style Hefeweizen with notes of banana, pepper and clove; and summer seasonal Sunshine Pils, a crisp, hoppy European-style Pilsner.

In addition to its three gold medals, Tröegs was also the recipient of the Mid-Size Brewery of the Year Award, while John Trogner III captured the Mid-Size Brewer of the Year Award.

“It’s like winning the Super Bowl, World Series, getting struck by lightning, and attacked by a polar bear all in the same day,” said John Trogner. “It only happens occasionally.”

The 2012 Great American Beer Festival competition winners were selected by an international panel of 185 expert judges from a record number of 4,338 beers from 666 breweries. Hailing from 48 states, Washington, D.C. and Guam, these breweries competed in 84 beer categories covering 134 different beer styles.

“The Great American Beer Festival is the premier beer competition for the American beer industry,” said Nancy Johnson, festival director. “Winning a medal, no matter if gold, silver or bronze, is truly an accomplishment.”
